We’ve only been in first grade for one month, but it feels like we have been here much longer!  The children have done such a great job of adjusting to our full day schedule.  They have learned so many routines and procedures, and I am so proud of how well they are doing!

Thanks for signing and returning your child’s first bi-weekly progress report.  I send these home as a way of helping you know how your child is performing in the classroom.  Remember - it’s okay if your child isn’t receiving a “perfect” progress report.  My purpose is for us to see progress in his/her behavior and academics, as well as to keep you informed.  The next one will be sent home on Friday the 16th

During Self-Selected Reading, I worked with 2-3 children at a time and helped them choose “just right” books from our leveled book collection.  Every child now has “just right” books in his/her SSR book bin.  Next week, Mrs. King (interventionist) and I will begin conferencing one-on-one with the children.  This allows us to differentiate our instruction and tailor it specifically to your child to help him/her grow as a reader.  I am excited to begin!

During our Guided Reading block, we continued to read books about families.  We read a new book “Flower Garden.”  Your child is bringing home a reading souvenir to help him/her retell “Flower Garden.”  Using a Venn Diagram, we compared and contrasted “Flower Garden” to another story we read this week, “A Chair for My Mother.”

We reviewed some reading strategies this week.  Using reading strategies when we encounter a tricky word will help us figure out the word.  This week, we went over the following strategies:  Check the picture, Think: Does that word make sense? and Using the first sound.

Bag-A-Book begins on Monday.  Your child will bring home a vinyl bag containing 4 books, a folder and detailed instructions about the procedures for this at home reading program.  As always, please contact me with any questions.

We began Unit 2 this week.  We used the number grid to practice our number sense.  We also learned 2 games: Rolling for 50 and Two-Fisted Penny Addition.  Directions for both are coming home if you wish to play them with your child.  The children received calculators for their tool kits.

 October’s the month

When the smallest breeze

Gives us a shower

Of Autumn leaves.

Bonfires and pumpkins,

Leaves sailing down-

October is red

And golden and brown.
