Thank you for coming to our First Grade Curriculum Night. If you ever have any questions or concerns about how your child is doing, please contact me! I would be happy to talk with you.
Bi-Weekly Report Your child’s first bi-weekly report is coming home today. Please talk about it with your child, sign the paper, and have your child bring it back to me on Monday so I know you have seen it. Let me know if you have questions!
Website Updates I plan to update my website this Sunday with pictures from September. You can check the website at the end of each month for new pictures.
Our reading strategy focus for the week was Thinking About What Makes Sense. Sometimes as readers, we get stuck on a word and only look at the letters in the word and try to sound it out. If we think about the story or sentence and what would make sense, sometimes the word comes to us quite easily!
During our Guided Reading block, we began our unit about families. We read the books “The Relatives Came” and “My Mountain Song.” We brainstormed a list of what it means to be a family. We drew and labeled the members of our family in our “All About Families” journal. We read the book “Saturday Mornings,” a story showing a family doing chores and working together to get things done. We then discussed and wrote about chores adults do and chores children do in our homes. We will continue this unit next week.
This week in math we did Explorations. Explorations is a time when children are allowed to freely “explore” the various math manipulatives that are used during math time. During this unit, we explored the pattern blocks, geoboards, unifix cubes, dominoes, and shape templates. Ask your child about his/her favorite exploration!
We learned about thermometers and how to use and read a thermometer. With the changing of the seasons, fall is a great time to talk about temperature changes!
Great job returning the Home Links on time! Thank you! |
