WOW Check We had our first WOW spelling check and the children all did very well! J I just want to clarify that when the word list comes home on Monday, the activities on the back are there for you to do if you are looking for ideas of ways for your child to practice the WOW words. You do not need to send anything back. In addition to the WOW words, there will be a word family that we will focus on. This week’s family was the –at family. Science We began a new unit about Magnets. The children tested magnets on various surfaces throughout the classroom to see what a magnet would and wouldn’t stick to. They also worked in small groups and tested smaller items. The children have learned that magnets attract certain kinds of metal. They have also learned that magnets should not be placed on a phone, tv, computer, or electrical outlet. Math This week in math we discussed the penny and the nickel. The children worked on exchanging pennies for nickels and counting penny and nickel combinations. Please note: Sometimes the Home Links ask for you to send in coins for your child to use in school. You did this when you sent in the Math Tool Kit money in September. Sorry for the confusion. Guided Reading This week we read the family stories Two Homes and Tight Times. The children created a Venn Diagram to show the things that were different and the same in the book Two Homes. They also wrote about a time when they didn’t get something that really wanted after reading the book Tight Times. We are working on making text to self connections while reading, and the book Tight Times really lent itself to this concept. Halloween Our Halloween party is Friday the 30th after the school parade at 10:00. Don’t forget that Friday is a half day and dismissal is at 11:45. Have a great weekend! |
