We have been learning the comprehension strategy of making connections.  As readers, we do many things to help us better comprehend what we are reading.  When reading a book, we may make a text-to-self connection.  A text-to-self connection occurs when you read a story and can closely identify with the feelings of a character or the situation in the story because something similar has happened to you.  As a result, you have a better understanding of why a character is acting a particular way, or you have some insight as to what may happen in the story because you have been through a similar situation.  The children will learn the difference between a silly connection and a meaningful connection.  For example, if I am reading a story about a girl named Sally who is being teased, a silly connection would be, “I know a girl named Sally.”  A meaningful connection would be, “I have been teased, and I know exactly how Sally feels.”  The children practiced making text-to-self connections when we read the family story The Wednesday Surprise.  We will continue to make more text-to-self connections next week.

Thanks for helping Bag-A-Book get off to a successful start.  Let me know if you have any questions about the program!

Our WOW (Words of the Week) words will be sent home on Monday.  Each week, we will learn 5 new WOW words.  We will do word studies with these words throughout the week and I will assess the children at the end of each week.

We continued Unit 2 this week.  The children were introduced to the analog clock.  We identified the hour and minute hands and practiced telling time to the hour. The penny was also introduced this week.  We learned the features of the penny and its value.  We also watched a great video showing how coins are made in the mint.

Social Studies

This week we learned about the job of a historian and discussed what an artifact is.  We also compared schools of the past to schools of the present.  Next week, your child will bring home a portfolio of work s/he has done during this school history unit.

Bi-Weekly progress reports are coming home today.  Please sign and return them on Monday so I know you have seen them.  Let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you!

Homework

Today your child is bringing home an at-home project that will be part of a class book.  A detailed letter is included with the materials.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Weather Changes

Is it fall?  Is it winter?  Each day seems to have its own agenda as far as the weather goes.  Please help your child dress in layers so s/he can be comfortable - whatever the weather!  Please also be sure to send your child dressed in appropriate outside attire for outside recess: hats, gloves, coats, etc.  Thanks!

Have  a  great weekend!
