Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been doing at school… · What did you visualize during the story Owl Moon? · What are some words that contain the short u sound? · What story from Writing Workshop did you choose to have published? · If you had to cook a turkey, how would you do it? · What are frames and arrows? A Few Items of Importance · If you have not yet sent in your order form and money for a class t-shirt, please do so by Tuesday. If this presents a hardship for you, please let me know. I’d love for everyone in class to have a t-shirt. · There is a school-wide Pajama Day on Tuesday if your child would like to participate.
Bag-A-Book and Math Home Links will not come home on Monday, due to the short week. I am sending home the December homework today in case you wanted to work on the project during our time off. Enjoy the Thanksgiving break! Celebration of Friendship On Monday we will be making applesauce, corn muffins, and butter in class, as well as stringing a necklace and making cards for a classmate. On Tuesday we will have a snack of applesauce and corn muffins. We will exchange our cards and necklaces at this time.
On Monday, please be sure to send your child to school with a peeled, cored apple in a Ziploc bag. Thanks!
We continued visualizing this week using the poem Five Fat Turkeys and later with the book Owl Moon. The children were challenged to show in a drawing what they heard, saw, felt and tasted during the reading of Owl Moon.
This week each child chose a piece of writing s/he has done that s/he would like to have published. I met with each child throughout the week and helped them with one aspect of their writing before publishing their piece. Next week your child will illustrate his/her published story and bring home a copy to share with you! For fun, the children wrote directions for How to Cook a Thanksgiving Turkey. (I recommend using a cookbook…)
This week we learned about frames and arrows. They are another way of helping the children learn adding and subtracting. We also practiced counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s using a calculator. Have a blessed Thanksgiving! See you on November 30th! |
