Thank You

Thank you to everyone who sent me flowers, wrote me notes, and gave me cards this week!  I was very touched by your kindness.  Thank you to the Workman PTO and parent volunteers who STUFFED us teachers with food throughout the week!  J We appreciated and enjoyed it so much!

Field Trips

Our field trip to the Detroit Zoo is May 28th.  Please return the permission slip and money by May 17th.  If you volunteer to chaperone you will be assigned a small group of children to oversee during the trip.  Younger siblings are not able to come with us on this field trip.

Writing

We published a poem and enjoyed writing more poetry this week!  The children have really been enjoying this genre of writing, and I am so impressed with their poems!  Before the children did individual writing, we wrote some poems together.  We chose a topic, brainstormed what we knew about the topic, and then tried to incorporate those ideas into the poem.  We talked through the writing of each poem as we went.  I am including the 2 poems we wrote as a class on the next page.

Reading

This week, first graders were introduced to classic tales.  A classic tale is a story that is known by generations of people and may have some or all of these traits:

  • Repetitive phrases (ex: “Run, run as fast as you can…”)
  • It can be told orally or be written.
  • There are several versions, depending on who is retelling the story.

We enjoyed reading different versions of The Gingerbread Man this week.  Ask your child to share with you what was the same and what was different about the versions we read.  I am sending home a rebus story of the Gingerbread Man that you can read with your child if you’d like.

Math

We reviewed symmetry and the children enjoyed finishing one side of a symmetrical design using pattern blocks.  We also reviewed number stories and did some more work with fractions.
