Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been doing at school…

*       What are some –all words?

*       What is a number scroll?  How far along are you in yours?

*       What does it mean when we say it’s “a quarter past or quarter to the hour?”

*       What is the difference between a sketch and a detailed drawing?  Why is it important to just do a sketch before you write a story?

*       What is the difference between a need and a want?  What are some examples of each?

*       Our Holiday Party that we had before break was fabulous!  The children enjoyed playing different games and making various crafts.  Check the website for pictures!

*       Book orders for January were sent home on Wednesday.  They are due on Friday the 15th if you wish to order.

*       Upcoming Dates to Remember:

Our weekly WOW words: no, all, they, over & when.  Our chunk this week was -all

We are wrapping up our Diversity unit.  This week we read Different Homes Around the World and Perla’s Family.  The children used a Venn Diagram to compare their home to a home located in another country.  It was interesting to see how our homes are alike and different!

Our focus during Writing Workshop continues to be small moments.  We learned that it is important to only do a quick sketch of our pictures before writing on each page of our story.  This is because we need to get to the most important part of the story…the words!  Once we are finished with the words we can go back and add details to our drawings.

·        We learned how to tell time to the quarter-hour this week.  When practicing this skill at home, please refer to the time as quarter to the hour or quarter after the hour.  We use this terminology at school, and children will be assessed on telling time to the quarter hour later in the year.  Thanks for your help!

·        We also began our Number Scrolls!  Number Scrolls are notebooks that the children keep in their desks.  Each page contains 100 blank squares.  During their spare time, first graders fill in the squares.  When they reach the end of a page they get a sticker.  It’s fun for the children to see how high they can get!  They will keep these scrolls in their desks until the end of the year.

·        We will begin the Mad Minute next week!

Social Studies

We began a new unit this week that focuses on needs and wants.  The children learned the difference between a need (something you need in order to survive) and a want (something you would like to have).  There are only 4 essential things people must have in order to survive:  Food, water, clothing and shelter.

The children also learned the difference between goods and services.  A good is anything you can buy, touch, or hold.  A service is something that others do for you (deliver a pizza, collect trash, etc.).  The children used their clay to make a good.  We then had some children provide a service of passing out a good (Smarties!) for us to eat.  After we ate our Smarties, some others provided the service of collecting the wrappers and throwing them away!

Enjoy this snowy weekend!  Be safe and stay warm!
