Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been doing at school… * What happened in the story Piggie Pie? What questions were you left with? * What do the symbols > and < mean? * In the number 48, which digit is in the tens place? The ones place? * Tell me about Tacky the Penguin. * How far along are you in your number scroll? * What are some –ick words?
Wish List The following is a list of things we could use in the classroom. If you can donate something, please send it to school with your child. Thank you! - Gallon size Ziploc bags - Envelopes for our writing center - Guinea pig cage bedding (pine or aspen) - Guinea pig food and treats - 2 or 3 inch masking tape - Plastic spoons
Our wow words this week were kick, zoo, had, this & was. Our chunk was –ick. Please read the letter that is coming home today about next week’s WOW Check.
During our Guided Reading block we continued our comprehension strategy of Questioning. We read Beatrice Doesn’t Want To and Piggie Pie. As we read, we discussed questions we had about the story. Some of our questions were answered by the end of each story, but some were not. Next week we will continue questioning using non-fiction texts.
Upcoming Dates to Remember: Friday 1/29 – No School Monday 2/8 – Report cards sent home Friday 2/12 – Valentine’s Day Party
We are working on writing the final copies of each child’s page for our published book. Each child also did a rough draft of his/her illustration. We will finish next week!
This week we did more than/less than comparisons and learned how to use the symbols > and <. Place value was also a focus this week. Please review at home what digits are in the 10’s place and the 1’s place. We go over this at school, but it can still be confusing for the children. We also continued to do addition Mad Minutes. We will switch to subtraction next week. I am seeing an increase in the rate at which the children can complete the problems! The class is also working hard on their fact power folders and scrolling. I will be sending home a packet soon so you can practice at home with your child, if you wish. My goal for each child is to improve his/her score by completing one more problem each time.
- Class lists will be sent home next week so your child can begin filling out his/her Valentines. We have 24 children in our class. - Please return your Pumpkin Sitter forms asap if you would like to take care of Pumpkin during an upcoming weekend.
Have a great weekend!
