Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been doing at school… * Tell me about the non-fiction animal book you read this week. * What are some –old chunk words? * What is the turn-around fact for 2+3? 5+4? Can subtraction facts have turn-arounds? * What small moment did you write about this week?
Upcoming Dates to Remember: Monday 2/8 – Report cards sent home Friday 2/12 – Valentine’s Day Party (see the next page for box decorating instructions) 2/13-2/21 – Mid-Winter Break Tuesday 2/23 – 100th Day of School!
This week’s WOW words were them, old, very, has & who. We also practiced words containing the –old chunk.
Your child’s 50-word WOW check will be sent home with the report card on Monday.
We used non-fiction texts about animals this week to continue Questioning. The children read the same book for 3 days, but used it for a different purpose each day. The first day the children took a picture walk and read through their book and noted what s/he wondered about the book. On the second day they read with a partner and wrote down something they noticed about their animal. On the third day the children were paired up with a different partner to listen to each other read and write something they learned from their partner’s text.
Next week we will read and learn about penguins!
We are wrapping up our unit about Small Moments. This week the children chose a new small moment to write about and next week we will publish our stories.
We also read a book called Somebody Loves You, Mr. Hatch and then each child wrote what love is to him/her. Their writing is going to be displayed on the bulletin board outside of our classroom.
This week we discussed turn-around facts. These are addition facts in which you can simply turn around the addends. For example, the turn-around to 4+1 would be 1+4. The children discovered that there are not turn-around facts for subtraction because the answer would not be the same.
We also learned about function machines. These are basically another way of practicing our addition and subtraction facts. The machine has a rule, such as +2. When a number is put into the machine, the rule is applied and a new number comes out. So, if I put 6 into the machine an 8 would come out because I applied the +2 rule.
Finally... For Valentine’s Day next week, please help your child decorate a container to bring in to collect his/her Valentines. We will not pass out Valentines until the morning of the 12th, but you are welcome to send the container in with your child any day next week. Please make sure your child’s container has his/her name on it.
Please have your child bring his/her valentines to school in a large Ziploc or paper bag on Friday the 12th. This will help keep us organized. Thanks! If you did not receive the class list I sent home, please let me know and I will email you another one.
Our party will be from 12:45-1:45 on the afternoon on the 12th.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Have a great weekend!
