100th Day of School Our 100th day of school was celebrated on Thursday! My, how the time has flown! We did several fun activities to commemorate this day.
WOW Words This week’s WOW words were: want, here, little, talk & nice. Our chunk was –ice.
Writing We are beginning a new form of non-fiction writing. As you know, your child has a homework assignment due on Monday listing 4 things s/he knows how to do. We are using those things to explore writing “How To” books. Your child will be learning about the format of this kind of writing. We will also learn about writing leads while working on this unit. So far, we have read some different How To books and practiced sequencing some How To pictures. Next week, the children will practice writing How To books in small groups and then individually.
Reading In Guided Reading we will be moving onto the strategy of Inferring. Over the next month we will be using poetry, comics and books to teach the children about this reading comprehension strategy.
“By using inferences, you elaborate upon what you read, drawing conclusions, going beyond what is written on the page. The voice inside your head doesn’t simply parrot back the author’s words, but instead makes guesses, finds connecting points, asks questions. You predict what might happen next, see a scene more clearly in your mind, figure out an unknown word, answer questions. You personalize what you read to build a deeper meaning.” ~ 7 Keys to Comprehension
Math This week in math we practiced our math facts using dominoes. We listed the 3 numbers shown on the domino. These are the 3 numbers we use to make up the fact family. We can make 2 addition and 2 subtraction problems from these 3 numbers. Your child’s Home Links homework (next week) will go into more detail and help your child practice showing the problems that accompany various fact families. Social Studies We continued our Family History unit by comparing and contrasting appliances, toys and clothing. Our 3 categories that we sorted pictures into were Long, Long Ago (grandparents), Long Ago (parents) and Today. It was interesting to see how things have evolved over time! If you have not yet sent back the Family History project that was sent home several weeks ago, please do so by Monday. We will be starting our presentations very soon. Bi-Weekly Reports Bi-Weekly reports will be sent home next week.
Have a great weekend!
