Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been learning at school…

  • Tell me about what you did for Mr. Burt on his birthday.

  • Who is Neutron Neal?  What experiments did you do with him?

  • What kinds of severe weather did you learn about this week?  Which kind were you most interested in?  Tell me a fact about it.

  • What centers did you go to?  What activities did you do at each?

  • Sing your WOW words for me.

 Mother’s Day Celebration

I’m looking forward to seeing you moms on Monday!  We will be in the classroom from 1:45-2:45.  Please sign in at the office before making your way down to our classroom.  The children are absolutely *giddy* about this event!   Be sure to bring your camera!

WOW Words

This week our WOW words were favorite, because, people, school & ride.  Our chunk was –ide.  Our list of first grade WOW words is now complete.  Over the next several weeks I will be reviewing the words we have learned this year.  Next week I am going to revisit some of the trickier words we have had.

Reading/Science

On Monday, we had a visit from Neutron Neal.  He came to present Weather or Not to the students.  The children got to do a variety of hands-on experiments involving weather concepts.  Everyone had a great time!  Thank you to the Workman PTO for funding this activity.

We continued our weather unit this week by learning about the following types of severe weather: tornadoes, hurricanes, thunderstorms, blizzards, and droughts.  Each day we read about a different kind of severe weather and discussed safety procedures for each one.

Math

We did some work using the number grid this week.  Our lessons focused on adding and subtracting increments of 10 using the number grid as a tool.
