Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been learning at school…

  • What are some topics you have been writing poems about?

  • Tell me about one weather instrument that a meteorologist might use when forecasting the weather.

  • If I have 6 cookies and I want to share them with a total of 3 people, how many cookies will each person get?

  • What kind of weather did you read about this week?  Did you learn a new fact about it?

  • What are some Earth-friendly things you can do to help take care of our planet?

  • Sing your WOW words for me.

ATTENTION MOMS!

On Monday May 3rd Room 8 is having its Mother’s Day Celebration from 1:45-2:45.  We are busy getting ready for this event.  Thanks a bunch for sending in $5 to cover the cost of craft materials, food, drinks, and other supplies we use to make this event so special.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is currently homeless during most of the weekends in May and June.  Please help!

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent home on Monday.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s progress.  You need to sign and have your child return the report cards envelope.  The contents are yours to keep.

WOW Words

This week our WOW words were children, animal, brother, sister & night.  Our chunk was –ight.  Our last list of 5 new first grade WOW words will be sent home next week!

Writing

This week we continued our unit on Poetry.  We learned about line breaks and how they are the “music” of a poem.  Line breaks tell our voice when to pause while reading a poem.  We experimented writing more poetry and made a conscious effort to use line breaks.

On Thursday, we did a special Earth Day piece called “My Promise to the Earth.”  Each child wrote ways that s/he will help take care of the earth.  These are on display in our classroom.

Reading/Science

This week the children were introduced to various weather instruments that a meteorologist might use when forecasting the weather.  Each child then made his/her own rain gauge.  We hung the rain gauges on the playground fence and will check them on Monday and measure the water in them.  The children also read in small groups about specific types of weather.  On Monday, they will be treated to a hands-on weather presentation by the Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum.

Math

We began exploring fractions this week.

 Have a great weekend!
