Questions to ask your first grader that will reinforce what we have been learning at school…

  • What does it mean if a word is a contraction?

  • Sing the Water Cycle Song for me!

  • What did you observe happening to the puddle in the classroom this week?

  • Explain what it means to see something through a poet’s eyes.

  • In the number 279 which digit is in the ones place?  The hundreds place?  The tens place?

Mother’s Day Celebration

Earlier this week I sent home an invitation to Room 8’s Mother’s Day Celebration.  This will take place on Monday, May 3rd from 1:45-2:45.  Please send back the RSVP form by Friday.  This event is for you and your first grader only, so please make arrangements for care of younger siblings during this time.  Thank you.  You’re in for a real treat!  J

Another note is coming home today regarding monetary donations for this event.

Report Cards

Report cards will be sent home on Monday, April 26th.  It’s hard to believe that there is only one more marking period left!  We’re entering the home stretch!

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is currently homeless during most of the weekends in May and June.  Please help!

WOW Words

This week our WOW words were give, down, come, can’t & won’t.  There was not a chunk this week.  Instead, we learned about contractions.  Ask your child to tell you how contractions were explained to him/her.

Math

We began unit 8 this week and it covered a variety of concepts in the first 4 lessons, but the main focus was on counting money amounts, including the dollar.  We practiced making totals with money amounts (Example: $.45 + $.67 = ?).Please review this at home with your child.  We are also working some more on place value.

Writing

We began our unit on Poetry this week.  It is a fun and challenging unit.  This week, we explored seeing things through a poet’s eyes versus through a scientist’s eyes.  For example, when looking at a pencil cap eraser a scientist would say that it’s small, soft, rubbery, and pointy on one end.  A poet would imagine it as something else such as a witch’s fingernail, a rubber raindrop, a tiny elf’s cap, tooth, etc.  The children were challenged to observe everyday objects and write a poem about one of the objects using his/her poet’s eyes.

Reading/Science

This week was all about the Water Cycle!  The children read several books about the water cycle and learned the 3 stages of the cycle:  Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation.  To make it easier to remember, we made a bracelet representing the stages and sang a fun song about it.  Ask your child to share it with you!  Next week we will learn about weather instruments.

Have a great weekend!
